Federal Minister of Justice
Marco Buschmann was born on 1 August 1977 in Gelsenkirchen, in the Ruhr region. After graduating from high school, he completed his civilian service at a care home in Gelsenkirchen‑Buer. From 1998 to 2004, he studied law at the Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn, where he passed the First State Examination in Law in 2004. After completing the Second State Examination in Law in 2007 in Hamm, Minister Buschmann worked as an attorney‑at‑law at an international law firm until 2013. In 2016, he attained a doctoral degree in law (Dr. jur.) at the University of Cologne.
He has been active in politics since 1994 as a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). From 2009 to 2013, as Member of the German Bundestag, he was responsible in the FDP for legal policy, and from 2014 to 2017 he was the federal party manger. After his re‑election to the German Bundestag in 2017, he served for four years as First Parliamentary Secretary of the FDP parliamentary group. He has been Federal Minister of Justice since December 2021.
